Ann C. Lammers,
M.Div., Ph.D.
Resident Staff Therapist

Ann Lammers has practiced in California as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1995, and she is now working toward licensure in New Hampshire. She earned her Master of Divinity degree from The General Theological Seminary, her Ph.D. in theology and psychology from Yale, and her Masters in Counseling from California State University (East Bay). She joined the staff of MAPS in January 2011.

For twenty years Ann has specialized in therapy for adults and children dealing with the effects of trauma. She has extensive experience in helping people recover from acute stress, anxiety, depression, and bereavement. Ann developed skills in treating survivors of violence during a clinical internship with battered women and children. She later trained in infant observation, which increased her sensitivity to nonverbal communication with clients of all ages. She also utilizes her training in EMDR, an excellent tool for trauma recovery and for unblocking creativity.

Ann relies mainly on the tools of psychodynamic therapy, to which she adds symbolic modes of expression – drawing, sand-play, movement, and music – especially when working with children. She offers EMDR, when appropriate, for clients of any age. This therapeutic method, which is partly verbal and partly nonverbal, can be amazingly helpful in dealing with memories and anxieties, helping old injuries to subside into the past.

Ann writes, “I try to stay attuned to the rhythms and currents of my clients’ creative and spiritual lives. I’ve learned to trust people’s mysterious ability to draw strength from inside. Good therapy opens the doors of the soul. Transformation – inner and outer – often comes when we least expect it.”
