Allison Smith joined the MAPS clinical staff in May 2009. Before moving to the Monadnock region, Allison earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, her M.Ed. in Community Counseling from The College of William and Mary, and her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia. She moved to the Monadnock region in 2008 to join the Applied Psychology faculty at Antioch University New England as assistant professor of clinical mental health counseling.
Allison’s clinical experience extends into such areas as mental health crises, severe and persistent mental illnesses, the aftermath of domestic violence, combined mental health and substance abuse problems, and the challenges that face undergraduate college students. Drawing from her fundamental belief that clinical work should focus on mental health rather than mental illness, she enjoys using humanistic, developmental, and strength-based approaches. In addition, Allison weaves creativity into her clinical work through the use of music, visual art, metaphor, and other alternatives to talk therapy. She is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS).
Additionally, Allison is engaged in research in and writing about mental illness stigma. Thus in her clinical relationships, Allison aims to explore any biases, assumptions, fears, and mistaken beliefs that exist regarding seeking mental health care, with an ultimate goal to eradicate such stigma. “The sooner we can begin to conceptualize mental health care as something just as important as physical health care, the better.”
