MAPS Counseling Services

  About MAPS

Since its founding in 1973, MAPS Counseling Services (MAPS) has endeavored to integrate the insights and techniques of psychotherapy with the healing resources of spirituality in order to help people find meaningful answers to life’s problems. And in keeping with our mission, MAPS furnishes these services in accordance with our clients’ ability to pay for them.

MAPS began its existence as a pastoral counseling agency, and with an eye toward this heritage, the agency continues to offer non-sectarian pastoral counseling. In the present day, it also has evolved so that such care includes high quality individual psychotherapy, couple’s counseling, group therapy, and support and education services through offices located in both Keene and Peterborough. The agency employs well-trained, New Hampshire licensed psychotherapists, as well as interns and residents working toward licensure. Individually and as a group, members of MAPS’ team of therapists also engage in personal spiritual practice.

Included among MAPS services are supports for those who are facing serious challenges and changes in their lives. The agency offers cost-free support groups for persons who have cancer and for those who are caring for loved-ones afflicted by cancer or other life-threatening illness. MAPS provides a support program for area pastors of various denominations. Members of our staff serve as chaplains for the Rivermead Retirement Community and for the Hospice program.

Mental health is almost always interlaced with spiritual health. Statistics indicate that well over half the people in the United States who seek professional help for emotional problems turn first to their local clergy or congregation for help. At MAPS, our clients’ spiritual life may include affiliation with a specific faith or doctrinal system or it may divert far away from organized religion or any specific spiritual beliefs.

MAPS considers spirituality to be a search for meaning and identity in life —  the quest for understanding who we are on a deeper level. MAPS’ therapists value our client’s unique spiritual beliefs and practices as important resources during the therapeutic process. And in keeping with this philosophy, MAPS maintains connections with area congregations and spiritual communities and continues as a resource where clergy can refer people with personal or family problems.

MAPS accepts most health insurance and offers a sliding fee scale to individuals in need of assistance. The agency gladly accepts donations to help us continue our work. MAPS is an accredited, non-profit, tax exempt organization chartered under the laws of the State of New Hampshire and proud to be an agency supported by the Monadnock United Way.
