Psychotherapy
means the healing of the soul (psyche), the most essential part of our being. That involves working with our emotions (sadness, anger, etc.), our body (pain, disease, etc.), and our spirit (breath, transcendence, etc.). At MAPS, we strive to integrate these areas by drawing on spiritual resources as well as the emotional resources used by most psychotherapists. We seek also to work with the close interaction of emotional and spiritual influences on the body and by close cooperation with physicians who specialize in healing the body.
Staff therapists at MAPS are licensed by the New Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice (or trainees for
licensure), and all have developed their own personal spiritual practice. Many are
licensed pastoral psychotherapists with specific training in spiritual and religious issues. Others are psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors
or marriage and family therapists who have special skill in recognizing and working with spirituality as appropriate to the needs of our clients. All staff members deeply respect the religious and spiritual orientation of our clients and never impose their own viewpoint or
practice. Judicious use of relaxation techniques, meditation, imaging, or other
specified spiritual traditions, teachings and customs may be used when appropriate to a client's need.
We want to draw on wisdom from
various spiritual practices.
Spirituality -- one's own personal awareness of connection to the transcendent creative energy of the universe -- is not the same as religion,
which is an organized system of beliefs and organizations to promote and enhance spiritual experience. Staff members at MAPS are members of several religions. MAPS does not represent any particular religion or spiritual practice. Rather, MAPS seeks to affirm the importance of
clients' unique religious and spiritual traditions to meet their particular needs.
