Dr. Van
Ness has been on the staff at MAPS since 1985. He received his doctorate
in transpersonal psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal
Psychology in Palo Alto, California, in 1986, having completed his
dissertation on Spiritual Aspects of Men's Mid-life Career Change.
Integrating spirituality with psychotherapy is his particular concern at
MAPS, and Dr. Van Ness has made several presentations on that subject.
He works with men and women of all ages and couples, using a variety of
therapeutic and spiritual techniques as appropriate to the individual
situation. He also conducts training groups in Meditation for the
Healing of Mind, Body, and Soul.
In addition to his work at MAPS, Dr. Van Ness
teaches in the Applied Psychology department of Antioch New England
Graduate School. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Pastoral
Counselors, and a Licensed Pastoral Psychotherapist in the State of New
Hampshire (license #37). Dr. Van Ness is an ordained Presbyterian
minister.
Before coming to MAPS, Dr. Van Ness was an
administrator and campus minister at the State University College at New Paltz, New York. He also served as pastor of several Presbyterian
churches in New York State. Having grown up in Glen Rock, New Jersey, he
received a BS in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.
