Gary received a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained a minister
in the United Church of Christ in 1968. Prompted by the mental health demands
of the parish and community, Gary returned to graduate school and received
his Doctor of Ministry degree in Psychology and Clinical Studies from
Andover Newton Theological School in Boston in 1976.
In 1975, he moved to Swanzey, New Hampshire where he pastored the First
Congregational Church. During this time he became a Fellow in the American
Association of Pastoral Counselors. Later he received from State of New
Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice his license as a Pastoral
Psychotherapist.
He was involved in the early formation of MAPS and for more than 20 years served
as our Clinical Director.
For Gary, pastoral psychotherapy utilizes the one-to-one and small group
relationship to help persons, couples, and families with difficulties such
as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, spiritual emergency, or communication
impasse in a couple or family. Gary believes the pastoral psychotherapist
brings a unique spiritual contribution to healing.
Areas of special interest to Gary include providing
healing opportunities for male and female incest and sexual abuse survivors.
Gary participates on the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team. At River Mead
assisted living facility in Peterborough, Gary is the Community
Counselor. There he provides a wide variety of psychosocial and
spiritual services to residents and staff.
Just as some people sometimes need an outside,
impartial person to help with problems, churches and other organizations
at times need a "third ear." Gary collaborates with
churches and their pastors during trauma, major crisis or change.
He also provides short/long term individual and small group supervision
for clergy and consults with organizations to provide assistance with
personnel and management matters. In addition, Gary leads the
Pastoral Care Training Program for clergy and lay people with pastoral
care experience and responsibility.
